I have been an internal medicine physician for 25 years. I always knew there was more to treating patients than just quickly making diagnoses and treating patients with a variety of medications. I took an acupuncture course when I was junior faculty at UCSF and loved the new ways I was learning to take care of patients: mostly spending time with patients and really listening to them and observing them. I always needed a secure position and was never was able to make my interest in holistic medicine the main focus of my practice. Now I am able to practice the kind of medicine I have always wanted.
As I recently have been doing a lot of geriatric home visits I realized I could do my functional medicine practice in the comfort of a patients home (or office). I had a mentor in my acupuncture training days in California who was an internist and acupuncturist like I was. He created a healing space in a converted home. There were no bright lights or off-putting upholstery and carpets. I feel like being able to get to the root cause of disease rather than treating symptoms in getting back to the foundations of medicine. Similarly to going to people’s homes like physicians did back in the day; I can be the Dr. Marcu Welby I always wanted to me since I was a little girl.
I see myself now as a partner in your health. We will work together on this journey to help you get to be your best self. I want to help you optimize your health instead of waiting for illness to set in.
With my traditional medicine knowledge and my functional medicine training along with many years of acupuncture and other treatments I feel like I have so many more tools to offer my patients. I feel well equipped to help you where you are. Whether you are looking to stay as healthy as possible or you are dealing with several chronic illness, my 360 degree approach will help you to realize what is available to get on the right healing path.
This functional medicine approach is not a quick fix. You will learn that the solutions to many of the ills you are facing are due to lifestyle choices that may need some serious altering. That is where I will be your health partner/coach and teacher.
One simple solution is your fork. What you eat determines who you are and what kind of chronic illnesses you might be at risk for or are developing already. The need for restorative sleep and having time to rest and relax each day are so vital. I have learned both personally and professionally how serious stress can be and what a toll it can take on the body mind and spirit. The relationship you have with yourself and others is also a major determinant of health. Did you know that studies have shown that loneliness is a bigger risk factor for the development of heart disease than other clear risk factors we have learned about our whole lives?(like high blood pressure and smoking and diabetes)?. The type and variety of exercise you do are also so important. Even getting up every 10 minutes within an hour at your desk can greatly improve your cardiovascular health and posture. You don’t always need to be killing yourself at the gym to feel like you are getting a work out.
Functional medicine is the future of medicine. We are faced in our culture with so much chronic disease such as diabetes, obesity and dementia. These illnesses are heavily influenced by diet, and lifestyle choices. Traditional medicine is often so helpful for acute injuries and insults to the body. However, when dealing with chronic symptoms and illness, the pill to the ill philosophy is not working. Functional medicine looks at the big picture of a patient and with a variety of tools such as diet, lifestyle recommendations, supplements and nutritional strategies, give patients a fighting chance to enhance their health and heal the diseases we face of modern society. You don’t need to have a problem to come see a functional medicine doctor. I will meet you where you are and help work on maximizing your health.
Also in traditional medicine doctors often dismiss symptoms. I will carefully hear your story in our first meeting and all of those symptoms you have had that didn’t make sense to anyone else, will certainly be welcome here and I can put those pieces of your puzzle together into a workable schema that makes sense.
